Engineering the Future: Women Leading STEM

Virginia Crosbie
Chair of Nuclear Panel
The granddaughter of a Welsh miner, Virginia was elected as the MP for Ynys Môn in the December 2019 general election. Her Dad had to leave Wales to find work which is why she was determined to create local jobs for local people. And she was successful; Anglesey gained Freeport status in 2023 and the Government announced that Wylfa would be the next gigawatt power plant in May 2024.
During the 2024 budget, Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor said “Ynys Môn has a vital role in delivering our nuclear ambitions and no-one should take more credit for today’s announcement than my tireless, tenacious and turbo-charged honourable friend for Ynys Môn.”
Virginia is known for her strong advocacy for nuclear energy. She founded and chairs the Nuclear Delivery Group, served as Vice-Chair to the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Nuclear Energy, and Chaired the APPG for Small Modular Reactors. She also sat on the Nuclear (Finance) Bill Committee and championed green taxonomy for nuclear in Westminster. She is currently a member of the board of trustees for the Nuclear Institute and a partner at Nuclear Capital LLP.
Prior to entering politics, Virginia had a successful career at GlaxoWellcome, and then as a highly rated equity research analyst for European Large Cap pharmaceuticals at leading banks including UBS and HSBC.
Virginia has a BSc in Microbiology and Immunology from Queen Mary College, London University and qualifications in Corporate Finance and Business from the London Business School and Westminster University.
